Open call for Emirati Artists for A.i.R Dubai 2014

In collaboration with Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Art Dubai and Tashkeel

Delfina Foundation is happy to announce that our partner The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, in collaboration with Art Dubai and Tashkeel, has opened submissions for the 2014 edition of our annual Artists-in-Residence (A.i.R) Dubai programme, held at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the cultural nerve-centre of Dubai that was formerly known as Al Bastakiya.

The annual residency programme for artists will once again coincide with Art Week, Dubai’s premier umbrella arts initiative, which includes Art Dubai, SIKKA - the Authority’s artist-led contemporary art fair, and Design Days Dubai.

Marking its fourth year of success, the A.i.R Dubai programme will open the doors of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood for three Emirati and three international artists, and for the very first time, a regionally-based curator-in-residence, underlining Dubai Culture’s mandate to promote intercultural dialogue and stimulate creative exchange.

A.i.R Dubai aims to support artists by providing a platform to develop their practice and create new work, while facilitating exchange between the artists, the local communities, and the broader cultural landscape.

The six artists will work together for three months, from January 7 to March 31, 2014, at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, exploring, discovering, and creating art based on the inspiration derived from the city of Dubai, where they will create their works in the run-up to Art Week 2014. The works will be displayed in an Open Studios Exhibition, which will be held in parallel to SIKKA Art Fair in March 2014. In addition, all six artists will be invited to propose site-specific works for Art Dubai Projects, the fair’s non-commercial programme of new commissions.

Khalil Abdulwahid, Manager of Visual Arts, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said: “The Artists-in-Residence programme has recorded overwhelming success over the last four years. The initiative, led by four key players in the local, regional, and international art landscape, underlines the need for global collaboration and intercultural dialogue to lead the growth of our arts industry. We are confident that the fourth edition of A.i.R Dubai will once again serve as the definitive platform for knowledge exchange, paving the path for future creative cooperation.”

Previous editions of A.i.R have resulted in the selected Emirati artists exhibiting their works within the regional and international art circuit, underscoring the initiative’s ability to serve as a springboard for aspiring artists who are at the wake of their career.
